Remembering The Past To Help Me Focus On The Future

Dia Duit my friends

It's morning here, not too early in the day, but everyone is still just stirring around. The TV is off and it's as quiet as it gets with four girls. It's a cleaning day. Time to get the house back into some sort of order.

I think every mother can relate to my feelings this morning...frustration, tiredness, uselessness, defeated. Didn't we just clean all this? Didn't I spend most of every day this week doing the same exact thing to the same exact stuff, saying the same exact things to the same exact kids???

There are times I just don't know what to do about it all. I feel like either throwing up my hands in defeat and just letting us live like pigs...clean pigs mind you, we're talking clutter, not filth!...or throwing everything away so there isn't anything TO clean.

I've been leaning towards the second quite a bit lately. I can't even begin to count the number of bags that have gone to the dump or the trunk loads that have already been dropped off to Goodwill. And yet.... :/ There's still more. It's as if when you remove the first layer the "stuff" starts seeping up out of the pores of the house. Like digging a hole in the sand on the side of the sea. You dig and dig, empty all the water out of it, turn around...and it's filled up with water again! A couple waves come and within seconds all that work you did just disappears.

So I decide to throw it all out. One of my favorite sayings is "If we get rid of it we never have to clean it again!" :-D And that's true! There are a lot of people who live very minimalistic lives and seem very happy in them. But I've been down this road before. I start picking up things, considering their importance and value, and then think "but what if I need this later?" :/ And thus begins digging by the side of the sea.

I can see where it's going wrong. I can see the spiral that sucks the stuff back into my house instead of allowing it to be released. But knowing that doesn't necessarily make the answer any clearer. If you believe like I do, that this country and our economy are headed for a real nose dive, that things are going to be tougher than we've seen in generations, then what to do?? My daughters have never known tough times, I never have, my parents really didn't...perhaps their parents have a clue as to what is coming.

I remember my Grammie speaking of the depression and war in Germany, where she's from. I remember her saying that they were hungry and that she will never go hungry again. Grammie always had a TON of food...her canning shelves were filled with jar after jar of produce that she and Grandpa grew. Grandpa always hunted and fished and it was put in the freezer. They had a beautiful home that Grandpa built. It was simple; it didn't have a den, or office, or family room, or formal living or dining rooms, lots of bedrooms or bathrooms. My mother and her sister even had to share a bedroom (gasp! lol). It was sturdy, it was built with quality and made to last, and it had heart shapes cut out of each window shutter <3 I loved those heart cut outs, it was a house filled with love. There was always room for family and friends. My darling husband has promised to make me those same shutters someday if God sees fit to have us own a house. Excuse me as I have a few thoughts here. Grammie lived thru hard times...really hard times...things that I can't even imagine...and things I hope she has forgotten. All of us are shaped by the things we live thru. So if I make an observation of her life after she had lived thru such hard times maybe I can learn from her what is really important and what I need to know and do now?? Sounds logical :o) Food...Grammie always had that food stored. We'd run to Zazzara's down in town for a few groceries, but I don't ever remember having buggies full of food. It always seemed to be the few things she needed to go with what she already had at home. Now maybe she did have those buggies of food before we had gotten there, but really there wasn't alot of storage for that type of thing, so I'd think I'd remember seeing it all. Grammie is an amazing cook...everything tastes better when Grammie cooks it. Our family gatherings always included lots of food...not fancy, but GOOOOOD. The same things were always cooked...I mean Thanksgiving without pumpkin, chocolate (pronounced SHocolate), and lemon meringue pie would not have been Thanksgiving at all! Decor...Grammie's house would have never made it into one of todays decorating magazines...but it was very tastefully decorated and comfortable. Things didn't change at Grammie's, hardly ever. I remember when they finally had to get new couches and new carpetting in the living room...it was just weird! The same glass dome clock sat on the fireplace mantel along with the brass eagle and candle sticks. The same lamps always sat there, the same end tables, the same coasters under the coffee table, same gold leaf dish, same bookshelf with the same picture frames filled with grandchildrens pictures (which would change as we grew), and the same corner console that held the ever important record player and radio up top and all of the records underneath. Things never changed unless they had to I guess. There was comfort in that...I always knew what to expect when I got to Grammies. If it was late at night when we arrived after our 5 hour drive there would be a pizza from the local shop in the oven that Grammie would turn on to heat up. The beds upstairs were always the same...the same pink blanket underneath the same white chenille bedspread. Why didn't they change? Was it because they didn't have money for new things? If they were poorly off we certainly had NO idea! Or was it just that Grammie had lived thru really hard times and was happy and content with what she had and felt no need to change it all the time? Maybe it was a bit of both...and maybe that is a lesson for me today! So many of the things at Grammies were handmade. I don't know if that was out of necessity or because she enjoyed it, or both. The afghan on the back of the love seat, the pillows on the couch, the doily's on the tables, the curtains in the windows. She has the skill set to be able to make a house a home. She can sew anything...really...anything. I remember her always having some needlework under the end table next to the loveseat...she was either crocheting or knitting something. Later we'd find some of those things to be dresses for us. She canned all the produce they grew. The only thing I don't remember Grammie making from scratch was bread, we did always buy that...and ice cream...but that was a Grandpa thing ;) We'd go down to Turkey Hill and get a half gallon of chocolate with the peanut butter swirl and another one of black cherry...they're still my favorites! I'm learning skills all the time, or at least I try to! I do can...I haven't braved the pressure canner yet, but I own it and will this coming year. Grammie taught me to crochet New Years 2000...I'm pretty handy at it if I do say so myself. I can knit now...not nearly as well as crochet. I've taught myself by watching videos online. I'm practicing...I have a long way to go before my needles click as fast as Grammies used to! I can sew. I have ALOT to learn there...but no one would be naked or go cold if they were dependent on my skills. I don't garden as well. Each year I try, each year I end up fustrated and wondering how Grammie and Grandpa always made it look so easy. I have a friend that is helping me now though and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can get next year. So if I try to sum up these thoughts maybe my lessons for today are 1) Food...having it stored up, and knowing how to cook simple good things from it. 2) House...simple but beautiful handmade things are best. There doesn't need to be alot, but what you have should be nice. Less is more. We don't need the latest and greatest...I'm sure there were lots of trends and new things that people just "had" to have...we were just as happy without them. 3) Know how to take care of your family and home. Have the skills so that you're not dependent on the stores and others. 4) The thing that really matter and made Grammie's house such a great place to be was being with family. Kids in the living room playing triominoes while the grown ups played pinochle. There was always a lot of laughter...some speaking in German when we weren't supposed to hear what they were saying ;) ...and lots and lots of good times. Can my kids be happy with just those things? I was. And maybe if I get rid of some of this clutter, this junk, this stuff that is sucking the life out of us, we'll have more time for those things :o) I think I'll go start cleaning...I see another trip to the dump and Goodwill happening this weekend!

This was our entertainment...boy great times when Grandpa would let us drive the lawnmower!!

Grandpa feeding my sister probably mashed potatoes with gravy.

And these were Christmas dresses that Grammie made for us. The shirt and skirt were both crocheted...I can't imagine how many hours she spent making those for us. We sure were cute though :o)

Saving Money is a Way Thinking

Dia Duit :o)

Today was a shop shop day. Not my normal day..but I don't drive in snow or anything that even remotely resembles it ;) Hubby was home today so he took me. There weren't any great sales this week and I didn't have any great coupon savings.
Yet I still think todays trip will end up saving me money.

Did yall see this in the news earlier this week?
http://www.examiner.com/weather-in-baltimore/florida-freeze-record-cold-may-squeeze-orange-crop

This paragraph particularly caught my eye..
The cost of the freeze has already hit the market. Last week, prices for orange juice jumped 3.6 percent acording to The Wall Street Journal. According to Bloomberg News, orange futures jumped 90 percent in 2009 on fears of a much smaller crop due to cold air damage

I normally buy a bag of naval oranges a week. I started when I found the 8 pound bags for $4.99. A couple weeks ago it went up to $5.99. That of course wasn't related to this weather. Today when we went the price was still $5.99 for the 8 pounds of Naval Oranges.

I had a choice to make at that moment..and it struck me that my way of thinking has changed. I could have thought "oh see, no big deal..." and just bought my one bag and gone along my merry way. I mean in truth the oranges are a treat that the girls enjoy but can just as easily live without. But I didn't...I thought "the prices are going to go up...I should dehydrate some now while they're still reasonably priced so that I'll have them later."

Instead of one bag I bought three. The first one has already been sliced and is dehydrating in Excalibur :-D The second one will be done tomorrow morning. So while there were not great savings...nothing that WOWed them at the registers...I know this will save me money, and not only that but I will have the ingredients I need when I need them. Next week if the price is the same I'll probably buy another three bags and then be satisfied with that.

Do You Shop at Thrift Stores? You Should!

Dia Duit, friends :o)

Part of shop shop day almost always includes a trip to Goodwill :o) When we lived in Maryland we never went to Goodwill. I remember going into one once, it was dark and dirty and smelled awful...I never went back! After moving to Virginia there were a couple years when I still wouldn't go to one even after hearing many ladies at church talk about their deals. And then one day I went...and it was like a ray of light straight from Heaven fell on me and that store and an instant bond was made. :o) I almost NEVER go to a "real" store anymore. With careful shopping and planning in advance I am able to keep my family dressed in name brands that I could never afford to buy in the mall for less than Walmarts clearance prices. I could never begin to figure how many thousands I've saved by shopping there these 9 years I've lived in Virginia...but I know that there is no way we could have the nice things we do and the standard of living that we enjoy without it!

Today for example I bought a new Queen Vellux blanket to go on one of the girls new bed sets that they will be getting for Christmas. I just checked on Amazon.com and the average price was $55...I paid $6! I bought a new white collared Lands End tshirt (and I LOOOOVE a good white tshirt!) for $3.50.

If you haven't checked out your local Goodwill or thrift store I encourage you to look them up online or in the phone book (do people still have those?) and check them out! You wouldn't believe all the new and like new name brand things people donate!! And while you save all that money you're also helping people who can really use a little help. Our Goodwill employs many people who couldn't go and get a "normal" job due to challenges they have. Our Mission Thrift Store takes all that money made to run a homeless shelter, women's and children shelter, drug/alcohol treatment programs etc...all while telling those hurting about the Love of Christ...I can support that! I can spend my money there and feel good about it, not like shopping at the "greatest savings place" ;o)

Dia Duit!

Todays Savings

Dia Duit friends :o)

Today was shop shop day...an exhausting, long, tiresome, shop shop day. I haven't slept well the last three nights and it's catching up to me, still the family insists on eating, so I must.

Kroger once again had a Mega Event sale this week. The Mega Event sale saves you an extra $5 for each 10 participating items that are on sale. For example Bumble Bee Premium Albacore Tuna in the pouch is normally $1.85 each (who pays that?!). It was on sale this week for 99cents, an 86 cent savings immediately (getting better). But then in was also in the Mega Event sale, so for each 10 that I bought I saved another 50cent off each pouch making them only 49cents a pouch (now we're talking! :-D ). I bought 30 pouches...saving a total of $40.80 just on Tuna!!! Tuna is an excellent thing for food storage as well ;)

A new thing I learned today was Krogers pricing policy. If an item is marked on sale and rings up full price you get the first item free and any others at the sale price. Well I made out quite well with that deal today! Razors were on an endcap in the pharmacy section. I had my coupon book with me as always and realized I had two $1 coupons for them and the sale was Buy 1 Get 1 Free (B1G1). There were 10 packs, but if you looked carefully there were also a few with 2 'free' razors in each pack...always look for those things! So the first two bags of razors where $6.99 a bag. I had those two coupons. So for $4.99 I got 24 of my husbands favorite razors :o) Great right? Just wait ;) There were also fancy pink "cool" razors that my oldest will enjoy getting in her Christmas stocking. They were $7.99 normally but also on sale for B1G1. Take note here that Kroger does NOT make you buy two of something to get the sale price, you can buy just one of the item for half off. So after all the shopping we get to the registers, thankfully my young friend who comes with me on shop shop days for a girls day out knew these policies and was able to tell me. So all the razors rang up full price. It seems that someone forgot to take all the signage down. So when we politely brought it to their attention the manager took care of it right away. Ready for this? Those $7.99 "cool" pink razors were FREE! And then the $6.99 razors for my husband I had bought two of...so they gave me the first one FREE and the second one at $3.49. :-D Oh yeah, I was excited!!

There was another lesson learned though...and that is...CHECK THE PRICES WHILE THEY RING UP!!! Those razors were no longer on sale...the sale had ended the 4th...FIVE days ago!! Now you just know someone bought razors in those 5 days and ended up paying the full price when they thought they were getting them B1G1 because they didn't pay attention while they were there. As soon as the manager found out and fixed ours he immediately went and pulled down all the old signage. A tough lesson for them, but a $18.47 savings for me!

Another big savings this week was on Barilla Pasta Sauces. Normally $2.99 a jar. On sale this week for $1.99...but also part of the Mega Event...so another 50cents off of each jar as long as I kept things in multiples of ten. I bought 20 jars. We love the roasted garlic. So a total of $1.49 savings per jar equaled a total savings of $29.80.

There were lots of other savings as well...but these Mega Events are such a great time to stock up on things for your normal pantry as well as your Food Storage Pantry. $60 of the savings I had today was just multiples of that $5 bonus savings. Another important factor..you do NOT need to buy 10 of the same item, although I do many times...it's every 10 participating items, mix and match as you like. While I carry my shopping list around I have my pen and make tally marks on the top to keep track of the savings...I don't want to get up there and have 29 items and miss out on $5 savings because I didn't buy an extra 49cent pouch of tuna.

And MORE savings...can you stand all this??? Still lovin it here!! :-D Kroger has been having a Holiday Rewards program going. If you spent more than $800 in a months time you will earn a bonus of 20% off ANY shopping trip between 12/26 and 1/11/2011. So, as I scope out the sales I will get the best deals I can and then save another 20% off of that! $800 sounds like alot...but most people spend at least $200 a week at the grocery store between food, paper products, cleaning supplies, personal items, animal needs etc.

Oh...and all of this counts in the gas points as well! I recieved $324 fuel points today...combined with my other ones I can now save 40cents a gallon on a fill up in my van which I'll save till New Years when we travel to see my sister. By then I should have at least 70cents off a gallon...right when we need it! 20 gallons at 70cents off will be another $14.00 savings...all these bits add up to hundreds and thousands...over $3,000 this year alone...and I didn't start till April!

I know this is getting long, there's lots of savings to discuss and I know not everyone understands how all this works so I want to make it as clear as I can so that everyone can take advantage of the savings. :o) I want to add one more thing though which is my plan with all these savings. I budget a certain amount for food each week. Now some people would take the savings and the extra cash back and run...but not me ;) My goal is to spend as close to my budget each week and get as much food as I possibly can for that set amount. So while I'm saving hundreds a month, I'm also still spending hundreds. All this extra savings is used to stock our pantry and Food Storage pantry. I just wanted to be clear so someone who spends $200 doesn't look at my savings etc and think they could have enough food for their family and a weeks menus and stock up only spend $70 ;o)

More Coupons!

Because I homeschool, and because I crave fellowship with other Christian women who are walking a simular road as I am, I belong to a forum online. It's a wonderful group of women and I have found some of my very best nearest and dearest friends thru there. We share lots of our lives together...and it was thru one of those sharings that a friend in PA mentioned a website where she buys her coupons.

www.lorihas3kids.com

So I went to check it out. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I've been quite happy with my first purchase and I have ordered again this past week.

She has the coupons listed by week. They are sold in sets of 20 (most of them) and are usually $1 (some of the big ticket ones I've seen for $2.50, but not many). So when you put in quantity 1, you will really be getting 20 of the same coupon. My first order I got 40 Fleishman yeast coupons that don't expire till April 2011 and 20 Sargento Cheese coupons that were save 50 cents off two packs. Kroger will of course double that so it's $1 off two packs.

This week Sargento cheese was 2/$4...subtract from that the $1 coupon for each two bags...and I paid $1.50 a bag for Sargento shredded cheese :-D We love the fancy blends they have...so I stocked up on 36 bags.

Note of warning...The Kroger register automatically stopping accepting the coupons once the first ten were used. Evidently it's a program thing. The young man had to call a CSM over to overide the other ones. She checked to make sure I had bought all 36 bags of cheese (and that I wasn't trying to use one coupon on one bag) and then ok'd the other 8 coupons. Had she not I would have had him just stop there and do a seperate order to continue my savings. But just wanted you all to know incase you run into the same thing. You may want to split up your orders between different shoppers with you, or hit several stores nearby if one is out of something you want.

The shipping with www.lorihas3kids.com is free if you go regular mail. This past order I put in on Sunday, I've already gotten an email confirmation that they have been shipped out on Monday here, and I expect them in my mailbox by Wednesday...which is perfect because Thursday is Payday and shop shop day :-D She is in FL...so depending on your location shipping times will vary.

And just a note on savings...I paid $3 for that first order of coupons. I have already saved $18 just on the Sargento cheese. Was it worth it...you betcha! :-D I'll wait till yeast goes on sale and then use my other 40 coupons there for even more savings.

Another saving tip...another way to trim a few dollars off the budget to then turn around and invest it in the Food Storage plan...I hear McDonald's in my head singing "I'm lovin it!" LOL

Dia Duit dear friends!

Coupons Coupons Coupons!!

I am entering the world of coupons! Well not so much entering...because I have been using them...rather entering the world of mastering them, I hope ;) lol

First of all, for any that have heard me rave over The Grocery Game dot com...yes...it IS good, and it DID save me time and money....BUT....there is a new queen of my couponing world

www.couponmom.com

She has Youtube videos on her website and at Youtube itself that show you how to use her sight...how things work etc...and ...the best part?? IT'S ALL FREE!!! Oh yes...you heard me right...all of it!! All the stores...FREE! I was paying $8 every 6 weeks just for Kroger...and it was another $5 for each additional store. Had I *any* idea I would have never! Now I know better though...and I want you to all know as well!!

So last night...while reading her site and while clicking some of the links in her site to other couponing Queens...I found a post of Zhu Zhu pets and massive savings. I had NO idea what a Zhu Zhu pet was, neither did my girls (we don't get out much, but we're ok with that ;) ), but I had heard of them, and heard they were an "it" toy this year...so I read on. According to this site, with a coupon that was FREE online to print (just google ZhuZhu Pet b2g1 coupon it's thru the cvs website) and their current sale I could get Zhu Zhu pets 85% off.

I had to try it. I needed a few more stocking stuffers...and I have no problem leaving things at a register if they don't work out the way I had planned...so what did I have to lose right? I printed out two of the coupons (you will need seperate email addresses) and headed to the store. I had to go searching...there were only 9 Zhu Zhu pets left (lesson learned..GO EARLY to get the great deals!). I bought 6 of them. Each one is regularly $9.98. I bought 6 and between their B1G1 sale this week and those two coupons I got 6 Zhu Zhu pets for $10.37 including tax. Absolutely AMAZING!! :-D 85% off...of one of the "it" toys for Christmas!! At CVS!! Who would have ever thunk it?? LOL

So I'll be doing alot more couponing :) I'm debating the best way to get my coupons..I'm thinking of just getting 5 or 6 Sunday editions of the Newspaper delivered. I'm also looking at buying them online...but that is the next post ;)

Dia Duit my friends...and happy savings! If you get the Zhu Zhu pet deal let me know :-D

Food Storage

Let me start this by saying I am not Morman, nor do I know any people of Morman faith in my real life. I have read their statements of faith and I cannot agree with what they believe..BUT..I found the differences are smaller than what I thought they would be. There are many things about the Morman faith that I admire and respect; their focus on family, community, preparedness etc. So I choose to focus on those things and will learn from them in every way that I can...and we'll leave the matters of salvation to each of our personal faiths.

If there is any one group of people who have a firm understanding and plan for Food Storage...it is the Mormans! :-D Their faith teaches that they should have at least a years food supply for the entire family. This is not just a matter of faith though...but of sound common sense, and in todays economy the value of Food Storage is almost priceless. If you google "LDS Food Storage" you will have hundreds of websites of which to choose. Can you imagine what a burden would have been lifted from many families today if they had only had a planned food storage?? So many people out of work, for so many different reasons...but they all have the same worry..."How will we eat? How will I feed my children?" Food Storage is really a matter of prudence, one which we would be wise to observe.

So I have begun working on our pantry. I have focused on stocking up on the loss leader sales at our local Kroger and then storing them. I have only bought things that I would have normally bought with the exception of canned fruit...I saved so much money that I was able to invest in that, which I normally can't afford.

According to some infaltion experts the price of groceries will be going up significantly in 2011...that is not the news that people want to hear, but I believe it is the inevitable and necessary course that we will have to take. Sugar in particular will be going up quite high...so I am stocking up on that as much as I can. This past week at Kroger a 5 pound bag of sugar was $1.98...I bought 5 bags. We don't eat alot of extra sugar in things as it is. I don't bake lots of cookies, cakes etc...but there IS sugar in baking bread...and if it all hits the fan I want to at least be able to bake bread! While I was at it I picked up an extra 30 pounds of flour too.

My plan is to prepare to have the absolute basics...and then to flesh that out with food thats would make life a whole lot more enjoyable and nutrious. I am planning for reduced electricity, or none at all...and trying to figure how I would handle that situation.

Kroger has just finished one of it's Mega Events. Most things were "buy 10 and save $5." Things like Campbells cream of chicken or mushroom soup were only 49 cents! Broths, soups, diced tomatoes, canned fruit...and more all for 49 cent a can. I bought things like 60 cans of diced tomatoes, 30 cans of cream soups, 30 cans of canned fruit. By the end of two days shopping I had saved exactly what I spent...so I got $500 worth of groceries (and that was all our regular stuff too) for $250!! Next time they have a Mega Event I'll be stocking up again...and even more so!

My next goal to work on is menus. Food Storage is something that needs to be planned. I don't need a ton of one thing only to find I'm short of some necessary ingrediant to finish the meal. I also have to keep in mind that I may not be able to get fresh ingredients to go with the meals...and I may have limited power as well. What can I store and cook that would be fairly easy?? These are the meals that I need to plan. I'll be checking out several LDS Food Storage cookbooks for ideas...again learning from those who have mastered this instead of trying to reinvent the wheel here ;)

There will be more and more posts on this. I will be sharing what I buy, how much of it I buy, just how many I'm preparing for, other preparations I'm making, and how I plan to store it all. Any insight, tips, ideas for this you may have...please leave a comment and let me know!

Dia Duit, dear ones!

Oh, How I have Slacked!

Dia Duit, dear ones :o)

I'm been MIA for quite some time now haven't I? I'm sorry about that...tis life I suppose...and it was a season of me having to learn a lesson. Things have slid downhill rather rapidly around here. Isn't it always amazing how hard we have to work to get things back in order and how quickly it all comes undone?? I have been learning what perseverence means...and the story of the Tortise and the Hare has been playing in the back of my mind alot. That and the story of the Ant and the Grasshopper. Between the two of them it's been a jungle!! lol

The house has fallen into an untidy state. Flylady...Flylady...oh where have you been?? Well truth be told she's been right where she always was...right in my inbox leaving me encouraging emails each morning. She has done what she could...I deleted her without even opening. Today though I will ask her to forgive me...and I will humbly accept her help in getting out of this C.H.A.O.S. Things have not gotten as bad as they were before I found her...which is encouraging...and I'm finding it MUCH easier to declutter and get rid of things...but there is still much to do.

The realization that I must train these young ladies while they are young if I don't want them to struggle with these same things has been coming to mind more often. Sometimes it's easier to make a whole bunch of adjustments at once. I know most say just take baby steps and a little bite at a time...but sometimes I really think it's easier to just rip off a big ol hunk and do it all at once. When taking just little steps it seems easier to slip back into the old habits because nothing else has really changed. So a big hunk of change is getting ready to happen here...I think it'll be rough at first...but that we'll quickly get the hang of it and in the long run it will be easier than the never ending changes. More on this in another post :o)

I've been preparing for alot of potential changes in the way we live. Most of them are politically motivated. Quite frankly I don't think our country is going to be able to keep treading water as it has been lately...I think we're going to have some hard times coming soon...and it's my job to make sure that we are as prepared as we can be. I'm fully confident that God will provide, that He will never leave us or forsake us...but I also think He expects us to use the common sense that He has given us. A friend posted a quote on her Facebook page not long ago and it has really made a lasting impression on me. I'm sorry I don't remember who said it...but it was "There will come a time when winter asks what you did all summer." We do know that winter is coming...what are we doing this summer...and I dare say I think it might be fall now.

During my absence I've had alot going on...My Daddy came to visit for several days. The princesses and I went to visit my Daddy at the beach. I went to visit my sister for a wonderful Celtic Thunder concert. We've had alot of extra chores around here preparing for winter. I've learned to knit. There's just been "lots"...I'm sure you all know how that goes ;)

So I'm back to Simply Living Simply :o) Not that I ever left it...but rather rededicating myself to it's pursuit. Posts will be much more frequent now...and if you find what you read helpful in some way I hope you will share with friends and family who might also gain some sort of insight or encouragement from it. If there is an area of particular interest to you please send me a message...I'll be happy to share my thoughts/ideas/opinions/habits on it if I'm at all able!

Dia Duit, dear ones!

More Thoughts On Saving Money

This will be more of an exhortation and encouragement than it will be practical advice...but we must challenge the way we think and the way we normally do things every now and again to be sure we have not slipped off the course we need to be taking.

The biggest hindrance I have found to saving money is peoples attitudes. Lets be real here...you could save more money if you really wanted to. I don't need to hear your excuses...trust me I have enough of my own ;o) But it is what it is...the truth.

I have known women who complained about how little money they had for this and that...but stocked up on soda and juice bags for their kids. I have known people who complain that they can't afford groceries and go and apply for food stamps...but smoke a pack of cigarettes a day and drink a case of beer a week. Seriously? They're not broke, they just have their priorities wrong.

And let me just say up front...I really don't care if you smoke, or drink, or buy soda and juice bags. I would encourage you not to smoke...it will kill you...but I smoked for a decade, I understand too. What I won't do is listen to you complain about how you have no money.

People feel entitled. I don't know why...someone lied to them I guess. And if someone else hasn't lied to them they seem to have lied to themselves. They have decided that what the "feel" about something and what they "like" somehow equals a justifiable need in their life. That's just not true!!

I cringe inwardly when I hear people say "Oh I NEED my ." No they don't...almost never do they "NEED" it. They desire it, they want it, they like it, they wish they could have it...but they don't NEED it. I can hear you already too.."but I need my coffee in the morning"...no you don't. No more than I do. I drink a pot of coffee a day...but if tomorrow all coffee disappeared I wouldn't die (I can't promise anything for those around me for awhile, but that's a different story ;) ) . Coffee is not a NEED, it's just a really strong want. But the reason I cringe is because the people who really believe that...are believing a lie. A lie that says that their wants are needs. Those false needs become little false idols.

False idols and grocery shopping...when was the last time you thought of that? When was the last time you've gone thru the grocery store and thought "have I lost perspective on this item?" I can hear the voices again...I hear someone saying "but Campbell's soups are better." Yup, they may be...but is anyone going to die if you have generic soup instead of Campbell's?? No, I don't think so. But are you willing to remove that Campbell's idol and "reduce yourself" to a generic? ;o) "But I like Campbell's better!"..and my response is "SO!" If you have no money worries and you want to buy Campbell's by all means Knock Your Socks Off!! But if you need to save money you're just going to have to suck it up.

You have to be willing to do without the things the "world" tells you you need...or your kids need.

Do you know what my kids drink? Water! Imagine that...water. They get ONE very SMALL juice cup (not the supersized ones now a days) of Sunny D each morning with breakfast. This is brand new for us..I don't buy juice...it's sugar water. Sunny D was on sale for 59 cents a bottle and a single serving has 100% of their Vitamin C needs. I bought 8 bottles. That Sunny D will last a Long time by only allowing the one small serving a day. Because I have saved in so many other areas I can now do things like this and not have to worry about it.

Later that first day after the Sunny D one of the Princesses asked me if they could have more. I told her...are you ready? Brace yourself....I told her "NO". (I know, gasp!) That same Princess said "But Mama, I want Sunny D" to which I replied "too bad, you may have water." Guess what she drank...yup, water.

My girls don't have fancy snack foods. There's no chips, pretzels, candy, gummies. If they want a snack we can cut up an apple for them to share. I get two $5 bags of fruit a week. They have 5 pounds of apples and oranges in them. So $1 per pound for the fruit. If they don't want an apple or an orange...well, too bad, they can wait till the next meal. No one is starving around here.

Do you see where I'm going with this? I could go on and on, and perhaps I already have. But it amazes me to see mothers in the grocery aisles piling their carts high with junk they don't need and then cringing as they get their bill. I imagine the burden of credit they're probably under, the stress they seem to ooze. And I feel sorry for them. I wish they could see how crazy it is.

We need to change the way we think. We need to do our best to feed our families healthy food in reasonable serving sizes. But we need to keep some perspective too. Food is fuel...it is something to keep us alive. It's not much more than that. It's not just about what it tastes like and what it feels like. It's not even about what we like...everything you eat doesn't have to be something you love. To put things in perspective lets remember that thousands of people starved to death in this world...TODAY. Do you think they would eat a generic? Do you think they would care if it was something they didn't really like? If it wasn't their favorite?

Our food supply is not nearly as secure as people would like to think it is. Our world isn't as secure as we'd like to think it is. We need to realize that things may not always be the way they are now. We may not be able to run to Kroger and get whatever we want whenever we want it. We may not be able to get all the exotic and out of season goodies we've all come to just assume will be there. We may not be able to afford all the things we think we "need."

I want you to think about something...according to the USDA reports we spent just under 10% of our disposable income on food in 2007. In the 1940's and 50's it was over 20%. People in other countries spend up to 55% of their income on food. Imagine next time you go shopping if you could only had HALF of the money you do to feed your family. What would you be buying then? Can you save money now? If you had to? Can you save the money and then use it to stock a pantry...yes you can...and I hope you really consider doing that. Think as you go thru the store. Challenge your ingrained thoughts.

You can save money...but you have to be willing to think differently than you have before and differently than your friends and family. You might have people snicker at you. You WILL get crazy looks in the store when you have 60 bags of veggies, 50 boxes of noodles and 50 jars of spaghetti sauce ;o) But you WILL save money, and you WILL have a stocked pantry. But it all must start with a change in attitude and by putting things back into their proper perspective.

Dia Duit my friends. Not a light and fluffy post, but sometimes we need to be more than light and fluffy.

Saving Money With Dehydrating

Dia Duit my friends! I'm on a roll today ;o)

First let me repeat my previous post...DO NOT waste your money on a cheap dehydrator. The money you spend on Excalibur will be well worth it!

How do I save money with Excalibur?

Well...in several ways. The biggest way is by buying things on sale and then dehydrating them for long term storage. We have a chest freezer...but there's only so much that can be fit in there. I'm also always worried about losing electricity and losing all of my food to spoilage. Another consideration is the cost of electricity and the possibility that we may not always have the current supply that we do now. Already places in the US have rolling blackouts and brownouts. As the worlds population increases along with our love of all things that suck up power it only stands to reason that rates will go up as demand goes up. Personally we have seen our budgeted monthly bill more than double in the 4 years we have lived here. Our usage has only gone up a very little bit...it's just been rate increase after rate increase, after rate increase...up to three of them in ONE year!

So how does this practically look for me?

First of all frozen veggies are cheaper than canned veggies when you work out how much actual vegetable you get. Cans are full of liquid. Even if a can of peas was 88 cent...the same bag of frozen peas for 88 cent would give me almost twice as much. So just knowing what to buy helps me save money. I love canned veggies, I'm the queen of last minute planning...but I pay for the ease of being able to pop it open and have it ready.

So Krogers frozen veggies are usually $1.39-$1.69 depending on what it is. That is for a 12 oz bag. I won't go into my tirade of them putting 12 oz in instead of the 16oz it used to be ;o) No sense fussing what I can not change. Several times a year Kroger puts their frozen veggies on sale for 88 cent a bag. That is an automatic savings of up to 81 cent a bag.

If I were a "normal" person I may buy at the most 5 bags...saving just over $4 and that's it. But I'm not normal ;o) The last time they were on sale I bought 60 bags of veggies! For a savings of...drum roll please...$48.60!!! Now we're talking!! But what on earth am I going to do with all those bags of veggies? I'm going to dehydrate them!!

The Excalibur has 9 shelves in it. I can usually get at least TEN bags of veggies in there at a time. So I only need to temporarily store 50 bags, and I do that in the chest freezer. I immediately start dehydrating things. There is nothing special you have to do...just slice the bag open, poor on the screen, spread them out in an even layer, and call it done! The only vegetable that I have found to be a bit of a pain is french style cut greenbeans...they just get so thin that they'll slide thru the screens and I lose alot of its and bits. Regular and Italian cut greenbeans work great though.

Some things that are very small to begin with get much smaller with dehydrating. I buy alot of the frozen diced onions and green peppers because they make my life easier...I would put down a gallon ziploc bag...tape down the edges with duct tape...and then dry those on the bag so that I don't lose them all when they shrink.

When the veggies are done drying I store them in recycled spaghetti sauce jars, pickle jars, apple sauce jars...if it's a glass jar with a lid I reuse it :o) Later when I have a bigger stash I'll vacuum seal more...but that will be another post.

Another way to save with Dehydrating is on fresh produce.

This week organic celery was $1 a bunch. I wish I had had more extra in my budget...I would have bought them out, but as it was I bought 6 bunches. If you were to buy that much celery and store it in your fridge it would go bad before you ate it....Not so with Dehydrating! :-D I come home and get the meat slicer down, slice up the celery in a matter of minutes...put it in Excalibur...and now I have dehydrated celery for all my cooking...already sliced and ready to go :-D How easy is that??? Oh, by the way...I saved $16.14 with just that.

Buy things when they are in season and dehydrate them so you have them once the season is over and the prices have doubled again.

Another great savings is by not wasting leftovers.

I made cabbage rolls not long ago...but I only needed the nice big outside leaves. Normally the rest of that cabbage would have gone to waste. Not anymore :-D I sliced it up on that wonderful meat slicer...blanched it for one minute...and dehydrated the rest. It is now waiting in my pantry in a ziploc bag for a soup or stew this fall when I will be able to throw it in for added goodness.

By dehydrating I can grab exactly what I need...and not more. Sometimes I don't need a whole bag of corn...now I can just grab a half cup of dehydrated corn and there's no worries and no waste.

There are many other ways to save with Dehydrating...I couldn't possibly exhaust them all here. But this gives you a start and are my biggest savers right now. I'll be back with more another day :-D

Dia Duit my friends!

You Need to Spend Money to Save Money

This goes against my grain too, but I am seeing the truth of it all the time.

There are several things that will make saving money on groceries and stocking a pantry MUCH easier. I have learned about all of these within the last year...and they have changed my life!! I am so thankful for those who first shared about them!!

The first is DEHYDRATING. Dehydrating to me was something that was done to beef jerky, and that was it. Boy was I wrong!! The best information I have found on dehydrating is at http://www.dehydrate2store.com . She has all sorts of videos, recipes etc. She made something that was unknown to me before not only understandable...but gave me the courage to try it. I've written before about my dehydrating and how to get the cheaper Excalibur Dehydrator...check my other post. But that $200 is going to save you TONS of money!! And it has a ten year warranty, how can you go wrong???

The second is a Professional Meat Slicer. When you watch the videos at Dehydrat2Store you will see her using the meat slicer. It takes the tedious job and makes it SOOOO much easier. There are things that I could never slice thin enough by hand. And there is NO way I could process as much food as I do without it. I consider it an absolute necessity along with the Excalibur...to the point that when each of our Princesses become a Queen these two things are the gifts we will be getting them. The best price I found was on HSN.com. It was $99 and came with an extra blade.

The third is a Sunday Subscription to your Newspaper for Coupons. The Sunday paper here costs $1.75 a week and it doesn't cost any extra to have it delivered...this way you can't forget to pick them up ;o)

Those three are musts...this next one is not, but if your time is limited it is WELL worth the money.

The fourth is to join http://thegrocerygame.com . I only do one store, Kroger, and it is $8 every 6 weeks. The grocery game does not have stores in all areas, so be sure to check your area. They also have a 4 week free trial. Do yourself a favor and wait until you have a months worth of coupons first. I signed right up and then watched for the first month at all the good deals I could have gotten...if I had had the coupons, which I didn't...it was frustrating. After you have a start on your coupons though The Grocery Game does the all the leg work and figuring for you. It has the sales for my area that week and matches that to the coupons that were in the paper. It also tracks the price trends at the store so I know when to use my coupon for the greatest savings. Honestly there is NO WAY I could have all that info, even if I had the ability I don't have anywhere near that much time....and hence the reason it is well worth the money.

Let me give you a quick example. I didn't need deodorant...it wasn't on my list, so I never would have thought to look for the sales and coupons to match it up. But then I go to my Grocery Game list and see that not only is deodorant is on sale for .88 (a great deal as it is) but that I have a 50 cent coupon from three weeks ago. Kroger doubles coupons up to and including 50 cent. So how much did I pay for that deodorant? NOTHING!! It was completely FREE! I do love free!! :-D I have at least six things of free deodorant stored right now.

There may be a few other things that would make it easier to save money...but these are the basics that I have invested in and have found them to be incredibly helpful and well worth the money. If you don't have the $300 for Excalibur and the meat slicer right away then start with the coupons and the grocery game. Take the money you save and set it aside for those things...I bet you have it in no time!! :-D

Saving Money Makes Me Happy

I promised a post on saving money...so lets see if I can share something that may help others. :o)

First let me say I have always been cheap, frugal if you'd like. It's built into the DNA of my family...I got it from my father, who got it from his...and I suspect it goes all the way back over to Ireland lol. It has gone past the point of necessity to a point of principle. It just feels wrong to pay more for something than I need to. But it's not only something that makes me feel better...I feel it is my responsibility, to God, and to my Darling who works so hard for the dollars we have.

Many of our bills are fixed...I pay the same thing for our cell phone bill each month. Now a truly frugal person could argue that cell phones aren't a necessity...and I agree...but pain meds for surgery aren't a necessity either, they used to do it with a shot of whiskey...there are some things that there is just no need to go back to ;o) We have evolved past that point.

I can't do much about those bills, so one of the only places I can cut back is my grocery budget. For alot of years I just found ways to cut back the actual total. I don't buy junk. There are no chips in my house other than some tortia chips for Mexican soup later this week. There is no soda, cookies, crackers (other than plain saltines), gummies, candy, boxes of cereal, fruit cups, etc...it's just not an option. I have four Princesses...they know to not even ask...I don't get pestered going thru the store. I planned my meals for the week, then bought what I needed to make them. I don't make fancy meals...we don't eat steaks and shrimp. I bought from the sales if it worked with my menu.

But over the last few years prices have just gone up and up and UP. As much as I cut back on the groceries it just never seemed to get me quite as much as it had before. Ontop of that many people have had their salaries reduced. Thanks be to God that we have not had to deal with that. What we did have though is our fourth Princess. :o) So an adjustment was needed once again. It was easy the first year when she was nursing, that doesn't cost anything. She's now almost two and eats as much as her older sisters! lol I hear stories of kids who have half a sannie for lunch...NOT HERE!! lol So I started pouring over the internet searching for ways to save money.

During this same time God started speaking to me about stocking a pantry and having a large food supply on hand. As tough as things have become, I believe that our country is in for a much rougher road ahead. I don't think we're all going to be holed up in shelters etc...but I do think inflation is coming...in a BIG way. Having a stocked pantry and a large supply of stocked food is an excellent way to help hedge against Hyper Inflation. What has amazed me is that as I talk to women from all different walks of life and all over the country they are telling me the same thing!! God has been speaking to them about this same exact thing...but none of us has/had any idea how or where to start.

WWW to the rescue!! :o) As I said, I've been pouring thru the WWW in search of info. And I've found tons of it!! Not all sites are helpful, some talk about it, but never give you any actual practical advice. Others offer tips that just aren't feasible. What I hope to do is write a series of posts and split them up so that it isn't one long book, and so that we can come back to any specific areas more easily. PLEASE leave comments and share any tips you have as well!!

Dia Duit!

Menu for Week of 8-23-10

Dia Duit, my friends :o)

It's amazing what a week or so can do...and a little internet searching ;)

I found a website, and I wish I could remember the name...but I paid $20 (yes I know that's very unlike me!) and got 16 weeks worth of menus...not only menus, but the shopping lists that go with them! I also got a half dozen Ebooks. A couple of them are just short commentaries stating the obvious and not overly helpful. For instance one is about routines...well it tells you how important routines are for 20+ pages, but never helps you make your own :? Oh well. But there was one jewel in there that has just made me happy this week...BREAKFASTS!! I hate breakfast! I mean I like to eat it...but I can't stand having to get up first thing and try to figure out what to feed everyone, the mess it makes first thing in my shiney kitchen...I'd just rather skip it. But I can't, so this Ebook has come to my rescue. It has all sorts of ideas and recipes for making breakfasty things and then freezing them. I'm not much for using the microwave, but to not have to deal with things in the AM...I'll suck it up ;o) I plan on sharing recipes and such as I try them out...look for future posts!!

So I now have an entire weeks menu including Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner! I will list these by day, but in truth I may mix things up thru out the week depending on my mood etc.

Weekly Menu

One of the things FlyLady asks us to do is to make our menu and grocery list the day before we shop shop. I've worked with a menu for years...when you don't have alot of money you don't just wing it ;o) I'm trying to expand my menus now though, and trying to incorporate a lot more crock pot meals into them. With our schooling starting soon and with life as busy as it is...not to mention cooking isn't my grandest idea of fun...I've found I'm able to serve my family better tasting and healthier meals when I use the crock pot. The fact that my Darling seems to really appreciate that helps motivate me as well.

My goal then is to post my weekly menu. For now it will be just dinners. I don't normally plan breakfast, it's usually something simple. Lunch is usually left overs, pb&j or something simular. I will put an >*< before any crock pot meals.

* Pesto Chicken with Sweet Potatoes

* Pasta Fagioli

* Chili/Cowboy Beans (whichever sounds better at that moment) and Cornbread

Hot dogs, Baked Beans, M&C

Lasagna

* Pineapple Chicken and Rice

* Lemon Dill Salmon, steamed veggies

FlyLady Adventures Update

I've been a little slack in keeping this updated daily, I apologize. I've been reminded why it is that things get so out of control. Life happens...and it seems alot of it always happens all at once. BUT, I have also been reminded at how well FlyLady can and will work!! Even with taking a trip to my sisters, running all sorts of errands, taking a day to visit a dear friend etc...the house did not lose any of the work I had done! I can't even tell you what a miracle that is!!

My sink is STILL shining, along with the rest of the kitchen :-D

I'm not tripping over shoes as I walk in the back door :-D

The living room is looking great :-D

I have gotten rid of SOOO much clutter in the main bath :-D

I've done really well at sticking to my 10pm bedtime :-D

I've done even better at getting up at 5am each morning :-D

This week I'm going to be finishing the main bath (hopefully today!), and working on the dining room. The dining room is right between our kitchen and our living room. So I have a shiney kitchen and a shiney living room...and this disaster zone in the middle...it's really making it stick out like a sore thumb.

I've been working on my routines and will be posting them soon. :-D

A Moment In Time

Dia Duit, my friends :o)

I'm coming to the close of the second week of my FlyLady adventures. I'm pretty happy with where I am :o) I took one day this week and went out with a friend. We hit the Goodwill and I picked up a few items for my Ebay work. Then we browsed the cute little country craft shop that I could never stop in with the girls. It was great, but definitely NOT child friendly. Then yesterday was shop shop day...always such long days. So even with two days of non-stop running...my house still looks good! YAY! The sink is still shining, along with the counters and stove. My living room is still shining, all nice and cozy and welcoming. My back entryway is still shining, that's been a bit harder with all our shoes, but we're getting it done. My pantry and laundry room are still not quite where I'd like them to be, but they look SO much better! My main bath is shimmering, it's about 90% done...just a few more touches I want to add, but lookin real good :o) There are still a few areas down here that really need some work, but I'm so much more confident now that I will be able to get it all done AND maintain it!!

I have been working on switching my internal clock back. Years ago I had to start staying up late and that started a vicious cycle. I really am so much more of a morning person. I can get three times the amount of work done if I can just get up early and get started before my body even realizes it's awake. My aunt, NeeNee, used to get up very early. We used to think she was a bit crazy...but now I totally understand! I've done real well with making myself go to bed at 10pm and waking up at 5am. It's a hard thing for the body to do...but I am determined...I believe I will be better able to serve my family by being up early in the morning.

I found a new gizmo while at the craft store this week. It's a terra cotta ring that sits ontop of a regular lightbulb. You put scented oil in the ring and then when you turn on the light it is warmed and makes the room smell good. It's genius and really works very well. Only a couple drops of oil is needed. I love smelly things and am always looking for ways to do it without flames so that the girls can't get hurt or a fire can't be started. It was only a couple dollars...well worth it.

Yesterday while out doing my shop shop I dropped off my new sewing machine. New being a relative term...it's new to me. Actually it's a BEAUTIFUL 1965 Kenmore Sears Sewing Machine :o) It's cast iron covered in an enamel coating. It weighs a ton!! But it's just gorgeous!! My neighbor was so sweet and kind to give it to me...I can't think of the last thing that excited me so. She still had all the original paperwork, accessories, even the boxes. The motor would try to work...but the needle wasn't moving. I think maybe after all these years it was just a bit gummed up. So I took it to a local lady who does sewing machine repairs with her son. I'm hoping to have it back by next week so I can finally start sewing some! I have plans for aprons, dish towels, and all sorts of goodies :o) While at Goodwill the other day I found a fabric over in the domestics department. It's a quilted Christmas Tree Skirt with the Nativity on it :o) I absolutely loved it...and even more so when I found out it was only $2! I've been wanting to redo our Christmas decorations for two years now but never found that one piece to inspire me...I think I have now. It makes me happy and makes me smile...that's what I was waiting for :o)

As I wrap this up I'm listening to John Denver sing Leaving On A Jet Plane...it was one of my mothers favorites :o) And today we are leaving...well the girls and I are. We're headed to my sisters for an overnight visit...she lives about 3 1/2 hours from here. If I want to leave here in 4 hours I should probably pack something ;o) Till I get home..

What 9 Days of Flying have done!

I realize there are some very brave brave individuals who will post before and after pictures of their work. I am not that brave!! lol But I truely do appreciate that they do so that I can be inspired. I hope my after pictures can inspire you enough without seeing what it was before.

My Darling Husband hung this shelf for me today. It has been waiting for a home...for almost four years now. I just never could find the perfect place to put it :? My Grandfather made this for me. He has passed on, but I think of him whenever I see it and smile.
This was the number one Hot Spot in our house. This is right near our backdoor...so everyone would bring things in and throw it there. Or if we were needing to do something on the other counters then we'd move what was there to here. I had a couple bread machines and all sorts of things there. Now it is a place that makes me smile!!

This is the back door area, where we come in and out of the house. Part of Zone 1 work is the Entrance to your home. This is a $2 wreath I picked up at Goodwill on my date night with my Darling this past Saturday. The colors are so bright and cheerful it just welcomes and smiles at you as you come in the door. Making a house a home does NOT have to be expensive.

My "new" stove...at least it feels like it! All cleaned and ready to go. The fan I picked up at a yardsale for $4. I love the "old" things. The outside of it is actually metal! lol

This is beneath the wreath. There are lots of mismatched shoes...but I'm sure we'll find the others eventually LOL

And this is what I woke up to this morning. After a rough night my sink was shining, my coffee had perked, and I already felt like I was ahead of the game. The canister set in the corner is one of my most favorite things. My Grammie had the same set for all the years I can remember growing up...such happy memories. I found it at a yardsale as well. I paid $20 for it...and it was worth every penny!!
I hope the pictuers inspire you to go and check out FlyLady. I have not come up with any of this myself...I'm just following her program and taking my Baby Steps. God has blessed her indeed...and she has shared that blessing with us...and for that I am VERY thankful!!

FlyLady Adventures Day 10

Dia Duit, my friends :o)

Today is a test!! We all have those moments in our life where we have to take a test...will I do what I said I was going to do? Was I serious about making better choices? Do I really believe what I say I believe, when it isn't the easy thing to do??

My first test came at 7:30 this morning. My neighbor has asked if one of my girls can be in the theater production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, I had said yes...I made a commitment. Tonight is my craft night, and a meeting at my church for the yard/craft sale that I am involved in. I assure you I would MUCH rather go to my craft night and sit and yap with wonderful women....but this is a test. Will my "yes be yes"...yes it will.

My second test was FlyLady...was I serious about wanting to change and do I really believe this will work? Yes and Yes again! I didn't get to bed till after 1am. My very dearest friend had to take one of her sons to the hospital last night. Praise God he is ok, although we are still praying for healing, it's not urgent now. But I could not sleep for the burden I had to pray for him...love him dearly :o) I don't mean to whine about not sleeping...It was my honor and greatest desire to be praying for him at that time. I couldn't have slept if I wanted to...it's like one of my own being there.

But the fact is that I didn't sleep alot. I had set my alarm back to 6:30 as it was to give myself the extra hour...but I was still pretty whipped when I woke up then. Today is exactly the day that I would crash and burn with every other self motivated routines or cleaning systems I had tried. Today I just wouldn't feel like it, so I wouldn't...and boy is it easier to undo what you've done, than it is to do it in the first place! Just one off day could send two weeks of work right down the drain.

Today that isn't happening though :o) I woke up tired. I'm not all dressed and lovely looking today. But I woke up and my sink was shining! My coffee was waiting for me because getting it ready and programming it is part of my Before Bedtime Routine. I was able to throw a load of laundry right in the machines. My dinner had already been planned last night and was waiting in the fridge...so it took no thought when I had to pull it out and make the cabbage rolls this morning. We even had breakfast planned...it was left over pizza...but it was PLANNED left over pizza! ;o)

Nothing has fallen apart :o) I had my list of things that I needed to get done today...and they'll actually GET done! And who knows...maybe I'll even be able to sneak a quick nap in before the afternoon is over :o)

Today I will be doing my 2 minute Hot Spot work, a 5 minute room rescue in the laundry room, and at least two 15 minute declutterings in the dining room.

Today I will FLY!!

FlyLady Adventures Week Two

Dia Duit my friends :o)

Today is Day 9 of my Baby Steps! Things are still going very well!!

I thought perhaps I should copy down the actual steps I am now doing. Yesterdays step was to start the Control Journal. I of course was all about the Control thing ;o) Today step is to add a 5 minute room rescue to my morning routine.

FlyLady splits everything into routines, which has been helpful because not only do I know what I'm supposed to do...but it's forcing me to do it when it needs to be done. When I had all the chores just listed out I would save the ones I didn't want to do till last...then of course something would come up and I wouldn't get them done.

Morning Routine so far is:
Up and Dressed to shoes. Fix hair and face.
Looking at reminders
Throw a load of laundry in
Going to Big Tent and reading the messages. I've also been checking the Facebook...it's great, very interactive and encouraging :)
Recognize the negative voices and get rid of them
Put out Hot Spots for 2 minutes

During the Day:
Decluttering is being added today. She doesn't state a room to start with...so I'm going to go with this weeks Zone, which is Zone 1, the front porch, entrance to your house, and diningroom. All of those areas are in great need of decluttering. I am planning to do at least one hour of decluttering a day. I'd like to get two hours in if possible before we start school up in a couple weeks.

Before Bed Routine:
Keep Sink Shining
Lay out clothes for tomorrow
Put out a Hot Spot for 2 minutes

I was reading this morning that we shouldn't be doing the Zone cleaning till we're done decluttering...but I just don't see how that can be. It could take months to fully declutter 15 minutes at a time...surely we should do some cleaning in that time ;o) So I will do the Zone work...but I won't start detailed cleaning until it's all decluttered.

I also realized I tend to think of my house as a whole, and not in the Zones. That has been very eye opening. Just because the dining room isn't ready for detail work does NOT mean that I can't do it in the Living room if it IS ready. It's funny how "all or nothing" I am without even realizing it.

Well...off to Flutter this morning :o) I still need to put out my morning hot spot and then work on my daily work :o)

FlyLady Adventures after 1 Week

Dia Duit my friends :o)

Today is Saturday...one of my favorite days of the week because it is date night with my darling :o) I'm so thankful for my oldest who is able and willing to watch the younger girls so that we can go out. It makes all the difference in the world for me to get a little break. I LOVE my girls...I wouldn't trade them, and homeschooling them, for the world...but a few hours with just my darling each week is a much needed break and time to recharge. I'm not sure where we're going tonight...going to see which restaurants have coupons, but it doesn't really matter either!

Today also marks one week that I have been Flying with FlyLady :o) I must say it's been a remarkable week! There is a long way to go before I'm completely out of CHAOS, but we made a significant dent in it this week!! The momentum is going and I'm feeling really good about things. Let me list a few of our accomplishments this week...and I say our because my girls DO help and have been pretty good about keeping up what I've done ;o)

The sink has shined for one week straight!! I'm not sure I can say that's ever happened before. My oldest still thinks drying out the sink is silly, but that's ok...she'll get it someday.

The shine has taken over both sides of the counter next to the sink!! They're completely cleaned off, wiped down, decluttered...nice open counters :o)

The shine jumped over to the other counters and stove...they're all shining now as well :o) I bought new drip pans...such an exciting thing! They now have porcelain covered drip pans for electric stoves...I did a little happy dance right there in the aisle ;o) LOL My Grammie always had a gas stove and I liked the porcelain covered burners so much better...they clean up so much better! I also bought new burner covers for the stove. They have roosters on them. I have fought the rooster urge for a long time, but everytime I buy something or see something I like it has some sort of roosterish thing going on...I think I'm going to finally stop fighting it and just enjoy the things that make me smile and keep my happy...even if they are large obnoxious birds LOL

The walls in my kitchen were all washed, along with the range hood.

The pantry and backdoor area have been decluttered and cleaned up and out. It's looking much better there. I still need a better system in place...and I'm thinking about what that would have to be to really work for me.

The laundry room has had a good size dent put in it. The laundry is just about caught up. There is still ALOT of work to do in there...alot of stuff just needs to be released...15 minutes at a time!!

The main bathroom is cleaner and less cluttered. Still got a ways to go in there...but I will rejoice in the progress that was made! I have more plans for the bathrooms in the coming weeks. I need to find crocks for the toilet brushes and I want to find some sort of container to keep cleaning wipes in to make the swish and swipe easier and more convenient. I took 5 minutes today and started working on decluttering all the makeup and hair stuff that I have.

The shower in my room was scrubbed today. These are the little things that FlyLady says that just make all the sense in the world...but I never thought of it. What she says is to scrub the shower/tub for just two minutes while the conditioner is settin on your hair. I felt so silly when I looked down and realized I had had a scrubbie sponge in there all this time and had never thought of that. So today while my hair was being conditioned I got the entire shower stall scrubbed including the floor. When I was done I just threw the sponge on the floor and scrubbed with my feet while rinsing the conditioner out. Nice and clean...and DONE! Genius!!

The livingroom is much nicer. We got rid of a few bags of clutter...some trash and some went to Goodwill. The Hot Spot ontop of the shelf is gone :o) The ceiling fan is dusted and smiling at me along with the rest of the room. The room is now no more than a 5 minute room rescue from company ready :o)

My Ebay stuff is cleaned up, organized, and stacked neatly in new totes. I took one of our little milk crate type totes and put all my Ebay business stuff in it. All the envelopes, bags, scales etc...all nice and neat :)

I have been up and dressed all but the one day. I have not laid my clothes out physically...but I have thought "what will I wear tomorrow?" decide, and then make sure it's clean and hanging ready.

So I'm thinking that has been a very productive first week :) I'm excited about what has been done, and what I anticipate being done this coming week! I'm still working on trying to figure out the schedule some. I have my most basic routines...but I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to be doing inbetween yet.

I'm off to get ready for my big date :-D I am so incredibly blessed!!

FlyLady Adventures Day 5 & 6

Dia Duit my friends :o)

I thought I would update you on my Flying adventures. I'm amazed...my sink is STILL shining!! And that shining is spreading!! My counters are now perfectly clean and clear. My canisters are shining. The shining even took a leap over to the other bit of counter top with the toaster. The shining is flickering onto the stove...it hasn't exactly come to rest there permanently...but it's getting brighter and brighter by the day :o)

With the exception of the other day I have been up and dressed each day bright and early. I can't honestly say I have shoes on all the time...but about half.

I have yet to make my post it's with the scripture. I got sidetracked today making cards for some very very special people :o) It didn't get my post it's done, but it made me very happy...I figure that counts!

I've heard a few negative things...but most of them have come from my children :? LOL Especially the oldest who thinks I may have lost my mind a little. I'm not sure I can argue with her...but now I'm trying to get it back! And I've had a few thoughts...especially in the laundry room...where I've caught myself saying "this is never going to end..." But it will...if I have to throw everything out it will end!! One basket at a time, one load of clothes that goes to Goodwill at a time.

It's funny...I was talking to a woman at church last night and we were discussing dehydrating. She made a comment about how her Grannie and mom knew how to do certain things, but they never taught her. I wonder just how much we've lost each generation?? It renewed my desire to get this not only for myself...but to have my daughters learn along side of me and so that I can teach it to them, so their lives may be easier someday down the road. The things kids learn thru osmosis seem to be the things you wish they hadn't...but we have to purpose to teach them the things they need to know, it doesn't happen by accident.

So Day 5 was those negative voices...recognising them and replacing them with loving and positive thoughts. I suspect that is easier for me because I'm such a "glass half full" person anyway....but it's also a choice. It's taking each thought captive and rejecting what is not good and pure and lovely, it's being kind to our self.

Day 6 is Hot Spots. Boy do I have them...just about every flat...or semi flat...surface in the house turns into a Hot Spot. It's the place where things just pile up. Where things are thrown down and collect. Most of mine are the flat places at 4 feet or higher...where the baby can't get to them! ;o) Tops of shelves, top of the pie safe, top of the butcher block. Today we were to spend just two minutes putting out a Hot Spot. The point is to tackle these places often...but for short periods of time. I did get one Hot Spot cleared off, and that is on top of our homeschooling bookshelf in the living room. So now when I receive a Hot Spot fire drill via Twitter I'll check that one first and make sure it stays out...then move on to the next one...my end table back in the corner...where the baby can't get LOL

There are MANY MANY things I will miss when my last baby is no longer a baby...but there are a few I will not miss too ;o) LOL I wouldn't change it for the world though!!

Today I was especially proud of us because it was shop shop day. We got up and out of the house much earlier than we would normally do. Three bags were dropped off to Goodwill...what a wonderful way to start the day...releasing things!! Then we went to Big Lots and picked up two new Lampers. The girls got the biggest kicks out of that...that's exactly what the sticker said...Lamper...part hamper and part laundry basket LOL And someone got paid for that bit of marketing genius...stunning isn't it?? Two of my baskets had cracks in the bottom...so those are being filled with things to release and will go to Goodwill or the dump depending on what ends up filling them. We also got a couple little hooks that hang over a cabinet door for the dish towels. I'm hoping by having those easily accessible the paper towel usage will be cut back significantly ;o)

Shop shop itself went well. I came in UNDER budget and even got a few things free with the sales and my coupons :o) I bought $12 worth of deodorants for 99 cents...that was fun!

Almost forgot to put breakfast in the crockpot!! I'll take pictures in the morning, we're trying something new...It's a recipe I found here http://http//crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/03/dulce-de-leche-crockpot-recipe.html We bought some apples today and that's the plan for tomorrow. I'm thinking the girls will enjoy it...if it turns out.

FlyLady Adventures Day 4

Dia Duit!! :o)

If I had to grade myself on my FlyLadyness today I suppose it would be about a B-. My sink is STILL shining...and I can't tell you how happy that makes me!! I am not dressed to shoes though. Can I justify it by saying I'm doing laundry and that way all my clothes will be clean?? And I did go to the other website and read the two inspirational testimonies for today :o) I appreciate that they're uplifting and encouraging...but also short.

On Day 4 we are supposed to put Stickies/Post-its on our bathroom mirror and above our kitchen sink. It doesn't say what these are supposed to say though...and quite honestly I think I may skip this step as she intended it and make it work for me. In both places I will put a scripture that reminds me of my God given calling. Proverbs 31 will be used for both of them I'm sure ;o)

FlyLady takes the house and breaks it into zones, then she concentrates on one zone a week ontop of our regular things...this way everything gets done every few weeks, and if you missed it then it'll get done in a few weeks again. This week we are in Zone 5...which is the Living Room/Family Room. I missed yesterdays tasks because I had to take my beloved for his root canal, and then I had to come home and work all day on getting my Ebay business back up and running.

Today I will complete both tasks. Monday we were to take the timer and set it for 15 minutes and then get rid of as much stuff as we can that doesn't belong in these rooms. Stuff that has been shoved in a corner, on the floor etc. This is NOT a deep clean...just 15 minutes of surface decluttering. I can do that :o) Today's task is to set the timer then for 5 minutes and do a detailed dusting in the living room. I can tell you that my ceiling fan is in desperate need. I have a few other knick knacks that need to be done too.

I'm appreciating the FlyLady method more this time. I suppose it may be because I have so much going on that I don't have enough time to think about things this time. I'm not debating "will it work, should I do more, this doesn't make sense, what's the point..." etc. I just want to get it done and move on!

One of the things she often says in regards to the status of our house is there is hope for those of us in CHAOS..Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome. I'd REALLY like to get out of CHAOS!!

And just to add humor to my day Princess number 3 just came in and got a wipey...she has peanut butter and jelly in her armpit. LOL I don't know how...I don't wanna know how...I'm just going to be thankful for the comic relief...and make her clean up the mess ;o) LOL

FlyLady Adventures Day 3

Today is day three in my FlyLady Adventures and So Far So Good!! :o)

My sink is still shining!!! It has ONE crockpot soakin in it...and that's it!

I was up and dressed to shoes again...but it only half counts since I had to get up and go to church anyway.

And Day three included going to her website on Bigtent and reading the news there. It is a forum type website and is a way to connect to others and be encouraged and supported. I read several testimonies...it is very encouraging to read short stories by others who have walked this same road and have come out to the other side succeeding at what it is they had hoped to obtain...Control over Chaos!

Tomorrow I will tackle Day 4...right after taking my beloved for a root canal. Not exactly fun...but needed...and it will feel better afterwards...much like shining my sink.

Dehydrating- A New Old Favorite

One of my favorite new techniques that I have learned...that has just changed my life in the kitchen, and saved me a ton of money already...is Dehydrating. I started hearing a few people I know online talk about it, I did a little reading, and then someone mentioned their favorite website for dehydrating. http://www.dehydrate2store.com/ I can't say enough good things about her website and I hope you go and visit it!! (I don't get paid for my endorsements ;) They are just sites that have made my life better...and I want to share them with you!) You can also search Dehydrate2store on Youtube and find a bunch of her videos.

I didn't have alot of money to start with (which is nothing new)...so I headed to Walmart and bought the one and only dehydrator they had. DO NOT DO THAT!!! It's a waste of money!! The dehydrator the woman uses in the videos is an Excalibur. They're a bit expensive...I'm not going to lie to you...but you CAN save while getting one. If you go to their website here http://http//www.excaliburdehydrator.com/3900-R-Excalibur-with-10-Year-Warranty-184-37-regular-prod.htm You will see the one that I bought. Yes it's refurbished...but it also has a TEN YEAR warrenty and is $100 cheaper!! I saved pennies for a bit and cut back on my grocery budget till I could afford it. It's one of the best purchases I ever made! The difference between this and the el cheapo at Walmart is night and day!!

I thought I'd show you what I dehydrated so far this week. Kroger has their frozen veggies on sale for 88 cents a bag...so time to stock up.

This is my meat slicer...which cuts a whole lot more than meat...more on this in another blog another day. I made chicken chow mein in the crockpot last week and needed celery. We don't eat a great deal of celery unless it's cooked into something. I bought two bunches of celery that week at the store and then sliced up what I didn't need to dehydrate. This is how I save money!!! No wasting food or having things go bad in the fridge...well not as much anyway ;o) lol.

In this picture, in the jar on the very left you will see both bunches of celery dehydrated. The small jar in front has two bags of frozen cauliflower. The jar behind that has FIVE bags of frozen peas and carrots in it. My big jar is a little empty right now...I need to get more corn dehydrated...but that is still at least three bags of it. In the jar laying down is two bags of brocolli and cauliflower mix. In the jar to the right of the corn you will see FIVE bags of french style greenbeans. On the very right is one bag of crinkle cut carrots. The ziploc bag in front is dehydrated cabbage...just waiting for soups and stews this winter. That also was a savings...I had made stuffed cabbage and that was some of the left over cabbage.

What do I do with all these weird dried up foods? Well most of them I stick in the crockpot :o) Let me show you...

This is what I start with...this is a 2 quart crockpot that I got on sale Black Friday at Walmart...I need a few more!

This is two cups of regular cut green beans. To this I add 5 cups of water. After one hour of cooking this is what it looks like...

Still a little funny looking...but after four hours on high this is what's for dinner...

Amazing isn't it??? It still excites me every time to see it come back to life! lol I have not rehydrated anything that wasn't as good as what it would have been had I made it fresh...or frozen as the case may be. I plan on doing quite a few blogs about my dehydrating adventures. There are SO many possitives to it that I can't help but share. The dehdrated foods take up sooooooo much less space. They can be stored anywhere, leaving room in my freezer for meats I buy when they're on sale. They last must longer...frozen foods last about one year...these same frozen foods that are now dehydrated can now last years!! And it doesn't cost me anything to store these for all those years!! It's a win win win win win in every way :o) Certainly one of the best things that has changed my life for the better in the kitchen!
